What is dark circle treatment with hyaluronic acid?
Over the years, the area under the eye loses volume and fat, and the tear trough becomes more visible ("hollow under-eyes"): a groove that casts a shadow and makes you look tired even after a good night's sleep. The treatment fills that groove with small amounts of hyaluronic acid so that the transition from eyelid to cheek is smooth and your eyes look rested.
At Sole Centro de Imagen we use a hyaluronic acid from a Swiss laboratory, designed specifically for the delicate under-eye area, which has been used worldwide for this treatment for more than ten years. It is not the same product we use for lips or cheekbones: the skin around the eye is much thinner and needs a different gel.
Its formula combines cross-linked and non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid at a low concentration: a very soft, mouldable gel that adapts to the thin skin around the eye and absorbs little water, which lowers the risk of swelling in such a delicate area. It also contains a dermo-restructuring complex (amino acids, antioxidants, vitamin B6 and minerals) and lidocaine to make the treatment more comfortable.

Which kind of dark circles does it improve?
Not all dark circles are the same, which is why we always start with an assessment. Hyaluronic acid is mainly indicated for dark circles caused by volume loss:
Hollow under-eyes or a deep tear trough: the main indication
Palpebromalar groove (the line between the lower eyelid and the cheek): also commonly treated
Shadows or a tired look caused by hollowing: improve once the groove is filled
Pigmented (brown) dark circles: the filler helps with the shadow, and we treat the colour with peels or depigmenting products
Prominent fat bags: filler does not remove them; if that is your case, we will tell you clearly at the assessment
The product we use
What is worth knowing about the gel we use under the eyes, according to the manufacturer and its instructions for use:
Swiss laboratory, with more than ten years of use in the under-eye area
Cross-linked and non-cross-linked high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid, at a low concentration
Soft, flexible, easy-to-mould gel designed for the thin skin around the eye
Low water absorption: lower risk of swelling in the area
Dermo-restructuring complex: amino acids, antioxidants, vitamin B6 and minerals
Contains 0.3 % lidocaine for a more comfortable treatment

What the studies say
The gel we use has been evaluated in a real-world study sponsored by the manufacturer and published in the journal Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in 2025. These are its main findings:
136 patients treated in the United Kingdom and France, with follow-ups at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months
75.6 % of treatments had improved at 3 months, as rated by both the doctor and the patient
In many patients the improvement lasted up to 12 months
85 % of patients treated in the under-eye area were satisfied or very satisfied
Average amount per area: about 0.3 ml
In the under-eye area, 14.7 % of injections caused some bruising and 7.8 % some swelling, all mild or moderate and resolved within a month; there were no serious adverse events

How is it done?
It is a medical treatment of about 30 minutes, always performed by our doctor with a cannula or fine needle and in small amounts.

Medical assessment
The doctor examines your under-eye area (hollowing, colour, bags, skin quality) and your medical history, and explains whether hyaluronic acid is the right treatment or whether it is better combined with another one.

Injection
After disinfecting the area, the doctor places small amounts of hyaluronic acid into the groove with a cannula or fine needle and gently moulds it. The lidocaine in the gel makes it more comfortable.

Recovery
There may be some swelling, redness or a small bruise for a few days. You can carry on with your day; we give you aftercare advice for the first few hours.

Results
The improvement is visible straight away and settles in about two weeks, once any swelling has gone down. At the follow-up we check whether a small touch-up is needed.
Sessions and how long it lasts
The number of sessions depends on each person's under-eye area; we confirm it at the assessment. As a guide:
One session is usually enough
Follow-up after 2-4 weeks and, if needed, a small touch-up
Duration: up to about 12 months according to the published study; it varies with each person, their metabolism and their lifestyle
Maintenance: a top-up when the groove starts to show again, usually after about a year
Aftercare
To help the result settle well and speed up recovery, during the first hours and days you should:
Avoid touching, rubbing or massaging the area
Apply gentle cold if there is swelling
Avoid make-up on the area for a few hours
Avoid intense exercise, saunas and strong heat for 24-48 hours
Sleep with your head slightly raised the first night
Let us know if you notice severe pain, changes in skin colour or anything unusual
What we combine it with
Dark circles often have more than one cause, and combining treatments gives better results:
Neuromodulators: for crow's feet and expression lines around the eye
Facial fillers or collagen stimulators: if the cheekbone has also lost volume
Skinbooster: to improve skin quality and hydration
Chemical peel or depigmenting products: for brown or pigmented dark circles
Who is it for, and when is it not recommended?
The treatment is for women and men with hollow under-eyes or a tired look caused by volume loss under the eye. It is not performed in these cases:
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Under 18s
Allergy to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine
Infection, inflammation or active cold sores in the area
Filler in the same area in recent months, without a prior assessment
Clotting disorders or anticoagulant medication, without first consulting the doctor
Very prominent fat bags: filler is not the solution
More rested-looking eyes
Book your assessment with our doctor in Nerja: we will examine your under-eye area and tell you honestly what we can improve and how.
Frequently asked questions
Your questions about this treatment, your medical assessment and aftercare.
Which product do you use for dark circles?
+
A hyaluronic acid from a Swiss laboratory, designed specifically for the under-eye area, which has been used worldwide for more than ten years. At your assessment the doctor will explain its characteristics.
Why a hyaluronic acid specifically for the under-eye area?
+
Because it is designed for the thin skin around the eye: a soft, mouldable gel that absorbs little water, which lowers the risk of swelling, and it contains a complex of amino acids, antioxidants, vitamin B6 and minerals.
What kind of dark circles can be treated?
+
Mainly hollow under-eyes or a deep tear trough, and also the palpebromalar groove. Brown dark circles are also treated with peels or depigmenting products, and prominent fat bags cannot be corrected with filler.
Does it hurt?
+
It is quite tolerable. A cannula or fine needle is used, and the gel contains lidocaine, a local anaesthetic that makes the treatment more comfortable.
How long does the treatment take?
+
The session takes about 30 minutes, including preparing the area.
When will I see results?
+
Straight away. The final result can be seen after two weeks, once any swelling has gone down.
How long do the results last?
+
In a study published in 2025, the improvement lasted up to 12 months in many patients. How long it lasts varies with each person, their metabolism and their lifestyle.
How many sessions do I need?
+
Usually one, with a follow-up after 2-4 weeks in case a small touch-up is needed. After that, a top-up when the groove starts to show again.
Is there any downtime?
+
No time off is needed. There may be some swelling, redness or a small bruise for a few days, which can be covered with make-up after a few hours.
What side effects can it have?
+
The most common are mild bruising and swelling. In a study published in 2025, in the under-eye area bruising occurred with 14.7 % of injections and swelling with 7.8 %, all mild or moderate and resolved within a month, with no serious adverse events.
Is it safe?
+
It is a medical device that has been used in this area for more than ten years, and it is always injected by our doctor in a licensed healthcare centre. Hyaluronic acid can also be dissolved if ever needed.
What aftercare do I need?
+
Don't touch or massage the area, apply cold if there is swelling, avoid make-up for a few hours, and avoid intense exercise, saunas and strong heat for 24-48 hours.
Can it be combined with other treatments?
+
Yes. We combine it with neuromodulators for crow's feet, with fillers or collagen stimulators if the cheekbone has lost volume, with skinbooster for skin quality and with peels for pigmented dark circles.
Who should not have it?
+
Pregnant or breastfeeding women, under 18s and people allergic to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine, or with an infection or active cold sores in the area. If you take anticoagulants, tell the doctor beforehand.
