What is a hyperbaric chamber?

It is a unit in which you breathe in an environment at a pressure higher than atmospheric. During the session the pressure rises gradually, is held for a set time and then slowly returns to normal.

Breathing at higher pressure increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood plasma that can reach the tissues. The working pressure and the oxygen concentration you breathe determine the effect of each session.

There are two different uses. Medical hyperbaric oxygen therapy is delivered in hospitals and specialist units, at higher pressures, with medical oxygen and on prescription for specific conditions. Wellness chambers, like the one at our centre, work at gentler pressures and do not replace that medical treatment.

Who should not use it?

Before your first session we review your history. Untreated pneumothorax is an absolute contraindication, and the following situations require medical assessment or rule out a session:

Lung disease, especially with a risk of air trapping
Colds, nasal congestion or sinusitis that prevent equalising pressure
Ear or eardrum problems, or a history of barotrauma
Epilepsy or a history of seizures
Fever or acute illness
Diabetes treated with insulin or other medicines that can lower blood sugar
Severe claustrophobia
Pregnancy
Some medicines and cancer treatments (check with your doctor and never stop medication on your own)

What is a session like?

Assessment
We review your history, medication and goals to confirm the chamber suits you.
Session
You settle inside the chamber and breathe normally while the pressure is adjusted gradually.
Afterwards
The pressure comes down slowly and you can resume your day straight away.
Plan
If it suits you, we suggest a course of sessions tailored to your wellbeing goal.

Possible effects and safety

The most common effect is pressure in the ears or sinuses as the pressure changes, as when flying; you equalise it by swallowing or yawning. Less often, temporary changes in vision or, in people with diabetes, low blood sugar may occur. Safety depends on the equipment, its maintenance, protocols and screening of each person. That is why we monitor pressure throughout, no flammable objects or materials are allowed inside, and you can alert us at any time.

Is the session uncomfortable?

No. You may feel pressure in your ears at first, as on a plane, which you equalise by swallowing or yawning.

Is it the same as hospital hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

No. Medical therapy uses higher pressures and medical oxygen on prescription for specific conditions. Our chamber is a wellness service and does not replace it.

Does it rejuvenate the skin or remove wrinkles?

There is no evidence that a wellness chamber rejuvenates the skin or meaningfully increases collagen. For those goals we will recommend specific facial treatments.

Who cannot use it?

People with untreated pneumothorax and, unless medically assessed, those with lung disease, ear problems, sinusitis, epilepsy, fever, insulin-treated diabetes, severe claustrophobia or pregnancy.

How long is a session?

We will advise on the length and number of sessions at your assessment, depending on your goal.

Can I combine it with other treatments?

Yes, it can be part of a wellbeing plan alongside facial and body treatments. We will tell you how to organise it.
