Cosmelan® is one of the most widely recognised professional methods for treating melanin-related pigmentation, such as melasma, sun spots and persistent pigmentation. It combines an intensive in-clinic phase with ongoing home care, offering a dual action: correcting visible dark spots and regulating melanin production to prevent their return. How the Cosmelan method works
According to mesoestetic, Cosmelan has a dual action: corrective, which removes and fades the visible spot, and regulating, which controls the overproduction of melanin to stop it coming back. More than a million patients worldwide have tried it. It combines a single in-clinic session with a home routine for around 6 months:
Phase 1, in clinic: a single session in which we apply the intensive Cosmelan 1 depigmenting mask; you go home with it on and remove it after 6 to 8 hours, as we tell you
Phase 2, at home: 7 days after removing the mask you start Cosmelan 2 cream, which completes the depigmentation and regulates the melanocyte, following the routine we set
Check-ups at the centre to adjust the routine to how your skin evolves
Very high sun protection every day throughout the treatment and afterwards

What does the treatment involve?
Treatment begins with the application of an intensive mask in the clinic and continues at home with a supervised skincare regimen to regulate pigmentation.
Initial assessment
We assess the type of pigmentation, skin phototype and skin sensitivity to tailor application times and a safe home-care routine.
Procedure
The Cosmelan 1 mask is applied in the clinic and removed at home. This is followed by a depigmenting home-care routine (Cosmelan Home Pack) that regulates melanin and helps maintain results.
Recovery
Initial redness and peeling are normal. The skin gradually settles as you follow the specialist's instructions.
Results
Dark spots gradually fade, and skin tone appears more even and radiant as treatment progresses.

Does Cosmelan eliminate all types of dark spots?

Is it a strong treatment for the skin?

It is intensive and may cause initial peeling, but it is professionally controlled and supervised.
How long does the full treatment take?

Around 6 months: a single in-clinic session followed by the home routine, which varies as the skin evolves. It may take longer depending on how intense the spot is.
Can I carry on with my normal activities during treatment?

Yes, it is not an invasive treatment. During the first few days, while the skin adapts, avoid swimming pools, prolonged heat and activities that make you sweat a lot; some redness and peeling is normal.
Can dark spots return?

The treatment helps regulate pigmentation, but daily sun protection is essential.
Is it suitable for dark skin?

Yes, it is tailored to your skin phototype, although a professional assessment is always required beforehand.
Can it be combined with other treatments?

Are there any contraindications?

It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for those with active skin infections or extremely sensitised skin. We always carry out an assessment beforehand.
Why should I continue if I already see results?
+
In the weeks after the mask the spot looks much lighter because melanin has been removed from the surface layers, but the melanocyte, the cell that produces it, is still overproducing. The home routine regulates it so the spot does not come back.
What happens if I stop the home routine?

The treatment is interrupted and the spot reappears as the skin renews itself. Without sun protection the risk is very high, because the skin is more sensitive during the treatment.
What is the best time of year to do it?
+
It can be done all year round, but mesoestetic recommends autumn and winter. In a place as sunny as Nerja, if it is done in summer you need very high sun protection and must avoid intense, prolonged sun.
Can I combine it with peels or other treatments?

For at least the first three months, treatments that stress the skin, such as peels, microneedling or exfoliation, are not recommended, as they could cause repigmentation. Soothing and regenerating treatments are fine.
Does it work for acne?

It does not treat active acne, but it does treat the spots that acne leaves behind, on all skin types and phototypes.
