How long does hyaluronic acid last? Lips, tear troughs, folds and cheeks

Hyaluronic acid is gradually reabsorbed: depending on the area and product, the effect can last from a few months up to a year and a half. Here is what it depends on.

How long does hyaluronic acid last? Lips, tear troughs, folds and cheeks

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule our body already produces, which is why it is biocompatible and reabsorbable: over time the body removes it naturally. That is an advantage (the result is not permanent and can be adjusted) and it explains the most common question: how long does it last?

Approximate duration by area

There is no single figure. As a general guide, the effect can last up to 18 months, but it varies a lot by area:

  • Lips: usually 6 to 12 months, because the area moves a lot.
  • Tear troughs: usually last longer, as the area moves less.
  • Nasolabial folds and marionette lines: around a year, depending on the product.
  • Cheekbones, chin and jawline: denser products are used, which tend to last longer.

At the assessment the doctor will tell you what to expect in your case.

What it depends on

  • The product: some hyaluronic acids are more fluid (for hydration or lips) and others denser (to add structure).
  • The area: the more movement, the sooner it is reabsorbed.
  • Your metabolism and habits: intense exercise, smoking and unprotected sun exposure can shorten the effect.
  • Technique and amount: a natural result does not mean it lasts less; it means it is well integrated.

How to make it last

  • Daily sunscreen and good skin hydration.
  • Follow the advice for the first days: avoid direct sun, strong heat and intense exercise.
  • Topping up before the effect has completely gone usually needs less product.
  • Combine it with treatments that improve skin quality, such as collagen stimulators or skinbooster.

What if I don't like the result?

One advantage of hyaluronic acid is that it can be dissolved with an enzyme (hyaluronidase) if needed. That is why it must be applied by a doctor, at a licensed medical centre, after a prior assessment.

At Sole, aesthetic medicine is carried out by a registered doctor with a prior assessment in every case. See all treatment areas in hyaluronic acid in Nerja and, for lips, lip enhancement.
