Laser hair removal or electrolysis? Which one suits your hair

It is the question we hear most often: “which hair removal is right for me?”. The answer depends mainly on the colour and thickness of your hair, your skin type and the area. Laser and electrolysis do not compete: they solve different problems and often work together.

How laser hair removal works

Laser (and IPL pulsed light) emits light that is absorbed by melanin, the dark pigment in hair. That heat reaches the follicle and weakens its ability to grow hair. This is why it works best when there is contrast between dark hair and lighter skin.

  • It treats large areas quickly: legs, underarms, bikini line, back or beard.
  • Usually 6 to 10 sessions are needed, depending on the area and hormonal factors.
  • It gives a long-lasting reduction of hair: what remains grows finer and sparser, and occasional maintenance sessions may be needed.

At our centre we work with several technologies (Alexandrite, Diode, SHR and IPL) and choose the right one for your skin type and hair. More details on laser hair removal in Nerja.

How electrolysis works

Electrolysis works hair by hair: a very fine probe is inserted into each follicle and a small current disables it. As it does not depend on pigment, it works on any hair colour.

  • It is the option for white, grey, blonde or red hair, which laser cannot treat.
  • It removes the treated hair permanently.
  • It is mostly used on small areas: upper lip, chin, eyebrows or stray facial hairs.

Which one should I choose?

  • Dark hair on large areas: laser.
  • Light, white or red hair: electrolysis.
  • Stray hairs left after laser: electrolysis to finish.
  • Ingrown hairs or razor bumps: laser usually helps a lot.

Before you start

For laser, shave the area (do not wax or pluck in the previous weeks) and avoid strong sun. With tanned skin it depends on the technology: at the assessment we tell you what is safe. On the coast, many people start in autumn so the treatment is well advanced by summer.

If you are not sure which option suits you, book an assessment: we look at your skin and hair and suggest a realistic plan.
